Message from Tatsuya Matsumoto sensei This work employs the Chōshitsu (carved lacquer) technique, in which patterns are carved into layers of lacquer built up on the surface. The technique originated in China during the Tang Dynasty and flourished in the Song Dynasty. In modern times, it developed in Takamatsu as a method of carving into vividly colored multi-layered lacquer.

I mainly work with the chōshitsu (carved lacquer) technique, which is one of the urushi techniques. Chōshitsu lacquer is a time-consuming and labor-intensive technique in which dozens of coats of lacquer are applied and sharpened repeatedly. Carving knifes tailored for chōshitsu are used to carve out the lacquer layers to express patterns. I hope you enjoy traditional Japanese chōshitsu works. I also hope that we can pass on the Japanese tradition to the next generation.
