彫漆箱「波光」 | Box with Design in Lacquer Carving “Wave Light”

Message from Tatsuya Matsumoto sensei I created this work mainly using carved lacquer techniques. In my hometown, Kagawa, you can see the gentle waves of Seto Inland Sea. However, as the sun sets behind the island, the waves begin to become wilder. I expressed the scene where the crest of those waves are illuminated by the setting sun.

I mainly work with the chōshitsu (carved lacquer) technique, which is one of the urushi techniques. Chōshitsu lacquer is a time-consuming and labor-intensive technique in which dozens of coats of lacquer are applied and sharpened repeatedly. Carving knifes tailored for chōshitsu are used to carve out the lacquer layers to express patterns. I hope you enjoy traditional Japanese chōshitsu works. I also hope that we can pass on the Japanese tradition to the next generation.
