堆漆帯留「蝶」| Obi clasp in Urushi Carving "Butterfly"

Message from Tatsuya Matsumoto sensei "Tsuishitsu" is a technique where layers of colored urushi are applied over a flat board (such as plywood) around 100 times. When the urushi layer reaches a thickness of about 6-7 mm, it is removed from the board, leaving behind a solid urushi board made solely from the layers of urushi applied. This board is referred to as a "tsuishitsu-ita" (layered urushi board). From this tsuishitsu-ita, I cut out various shapes using a handsaw to create "tsuishitsu gōshi" (tea utensils, incense containers, etc.). The remaining parts are used to make tsuishitsu accessories. By diagonally shaving and polishing the tsuishitsu-ita, the layers of urushi applied one by one reveal themselves as patterns. These are all handmade "solid urushi" gems.

I mainly work with the chōshitsu (carved lacquer) technique, which is one of the urushi techniques. Chōshitsu lacquer is a time-consuming and labor-intensive technique in which dozens of coats of lacquer are applied and sharpened repeatedly. Carving knifes tailored for chōshitsu are used to carve out the lacquer layers to express patterns. I hope you enjoy traditional Japanese chōshitsu works. I also hope that we can pass on the Japanese tradition to the next generation.
