Message from Suiko Buseki sensei Susudake refers to bamboo that has been exposed for many years to the smoke from hearths in traditional thatched-roof houses, gradually taking on a rich brown or amber hue. Areas not exposed to smoke remain lighter in color, creating natural patterns of light and dark where the bamboo was bound with rope. We hope you can appreciate and enjoy the unique texture and charm of this now-rare susudake.

The techniques of bambooworks include "Amimono (plaited bamboo)", which is the weaving of bamboo strips, and "Kumimono (paralell construction)", which is the assembling of bamboo strips by utilizing the lines of the strips. There are bamboo techniques I learned from my master, Shokansai Iizuka (a living national treasure).

My specialty is the technique of bundle weaving and openwork weaving. The theme of my artwork is a scene of nature.

Received the Japan Kōgeikai Members’ Award – Asuka Cruise Prize (2024)
