Message from Tomoko Eri sensei The decorative box was created with the aim of conveying a bright and hopeful atmosphere of spring. The framed piece features alternating painted and kirikane-decorated cypress rods alongside glass rods. I hope that the way it changes appearance depending on the viewing angle will evoke the sparkling night sky.

Kirikane (cut foil embellishing) is a technique in which gold or platinum foil is cut into small pieces with a bamboo knife and pasted together with a brush to create a pattern. In Japan, it has been developed and refined as a technique suitable for the decoration and solemnization of Buddhist statues and paintings. While I myself am involved in the solemnization of Buddhist statues, I also carefully inherit the spirit of my predecessors who have preserved and handed down this technique in my own kōgei artworks, and I am seeking the expression of kirikane in the current era. I would be happy if you could feel the existence of kirikane close to you. I would also like you to feel the luster of kirikane, which changes with the passage of time and the angle from which it is viewed.
