Message from Chikako Ueda sensei
Thank you very much for taking the time to view my work. I am Chikako Ueda.
This piece, titled "Firefly Squid," was created using a traditional metalworking technique known as "tankin", in which a single sheet of metal is hammered hundreds or even thousands of times by hand.
I poured into this work a sense of reverence for the small lives that drift through the sea at night—luminous, fleeting, and somehow endearing.
I hope this piece brings you a sense of the preciousness of life, and allows you to feel a little closer to the wonders of nature.

I create my work with the hope that people can feel softness and warmth in the material of metal, using themes from nature and living creatures.
Growing up in Kyoto—a place where the ideals of utility and beauty have long been intertwined through tea utensils, Buddhist implements, and more—I learned from my father the value of crafting things meant to be used. Rather than seeing myself as creating “artworks,” I feel that by making objects to be used, I am giving them life.
Through use and appreciation, I hope to create pieces that will be cherished for a long time.
