Message from Shimpei Matsuzaki sensei
I create all of my works using the togi-dashi maki-e (polished maki-e) technique. Although this method has traditionally been used in Japanese crafts, I wanted to explore whether it could function as a form of pure pictorial expression, and this work is the result of that challenge.
After coating the surface with lacquer, I sprinkle gold and silver powders, carefully controlling the degree of shading to build subtle gradations. I struggled to achieve the delicate and ambiguous transitions that emerge from this process, as even the slightest adjustment can significantly alter the atmosphere of the piece.
I was drawn to the quiet beauty of soft, diffused light and the air that appears at night. If, when standing before this work, viewers can sense the gently blurred atmosphere of the night—almost as if the air itself is seeping into the space—I would be very happy.

My specialties and techniques are raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) and maki-e (sprinkled gold), that I also use in my artworks. I studied under Mr. Norihiko Ogura in the decorative technique of maki-e and raden, and studied the fusezaishiki (under coloring) technique under him. Currently, in order to deepen my research on raden techniques, I am working in Okinawa Prefecture, the place of origin of luminous shells.
