What is Neriage (marbleized clay)?

In neriage works, various colored clays are stacked or pasted together to create the piece. By combining clays in different ways, various patterns can be created, and the patterns on the cross-section will appear on the surface of the vessel. As colored clays contain different components, careful attention is needed to prevent cracking or peeling. The inside and outside of the finished piece will have similar patterns.

Making Process of Neriage

① Thinly slice blue and white clays alternately

② Align the thickness and cut

③ Stack to form a large cylinder

④ Patterns will form on the cross-section of the large cylinder

⑤ Cut to the necessary thickness for a plate

⑥ Place on a mold to give the plate a curved shape

⑦ Shape and bisque fire

⑧ Apply transparent glaze, fire again, and finish
