Message from Taisuke Shiraiwa sensei This is an unglazed yakishime teapot, fired for two full days and nights in an anagama (tunnel kiln). No two works can ever be created alike, and because anagama firing involves strong reduction, achieving beautiful coloration is an extremely challenging process. A wood-fired kiln, as the name suggests, is a kiln that uses firewood as its fuel.

Since my university days, I have visited Yohei Konishi, a holder of the intangible cultural property designation in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, to learn the craft of making kyūsu (Japanese teapots).
I built a wood-fired kiln in Hakodate, where I continue to make kyūsu.
Using Tokoname clay and local materials from Hakodate, along with firewood from the southern Hokkaido region, I create yakishime kyūsu—un-glazed teapots formed by the natural effects of flame and ash glaze.
