Message from 6th Sekisui Ito sensei My ceramics are created using Mumyōi clay sourced from the foothills of the Sado Gold Mine—just a five-minute drive from my hometown. This site has been submitted for consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mumyōi-yaki is a traditional ceramic technique that originated on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture in the late Edo period. Sado’s pottery clay includes two main types: a distinctive red clay rich in ferric oxide, and a white clay known as Nozaka-tsuchi. Both are broadly categorized as Mumyōi-yaki. As the sixth-generation Akamizu, I have developed my own style distinct from the red-glazed works of my predecessor, the fifth-generation Akamizu. I work with Nozaka clay and have developed a unique Hanada (deep blue) glaze, which uses iron as a natural colorant. This particular piece features the Hanada glaze flowing across a modern vessel form, evoking the gentle movement of water. Unlike industrial products, no two pieces are ever the same. I hope you enjoy the individuality and character of each handmade work.

I make ceramics based on mumyōi clay, which comes from the foot of Sado Gold Mine, a UNESCO nomination site located a five-minute drive from my hometown. Mumyōi ware is a ceramic technique that has been handed down from the late Edo period on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture. There are two types of clay on Sado Island: red clay containing high ferric oxide content and white clay called nosaka zuchi, both of them are called mumyōi ware in a broad sense. I, Sekisui VI, unlike the red style of the Sekisui V, used Nosaka clay and perfected the hanada (indigo) glaze, in which iron is used as a coloring agent. The modern design of the bowl is covered with the blue glaze, which represents the flow of water. Please appreciate the artworks unlike industrial products, no two pieces are alike.
