About Zōgan
象嵌とは器の表面を駆り、その彫った部分に色の違う粘土を嵌めこんで模様をつけます。粘土を嵌めこんだ後、釉薬をかけて本焼するとできあがります。金工や木工芸でよく使われる技法です。
| What is Zōgan? |
Zōgan is a technique where different colored clay is embedded in carved parts on the surface of an object to create a pattern. After embedding the clay, it is coated with glaze and fired to completion.
Originally used in metalwork and woodwork kōgei, unlike drawing patterns on the surface of an object, the colors of the clay itself create a sense of contrast in the pattern.
| Making Process of Zōgan |
① Create patterns on the surface of the clay
② Embed different colored clay in the carved parts
③ Trim the excess and bisque fire
④ Apply several types of glaze and fire to completion
